Folding Love

In the traditional funeral of Taiwan, burning the paper lotus and paper ingots folded by family members for the dead is to convey their most beautiful blessings. This picture book depicts that a little man wearing a fur coat suffered from the sorrow of losing his father. Through the process of folding the things what his dad loved, he can reconnect with his father’s existence. For a little man, the way of folding the papers has become not only a ceremony of healing mind but also a love of leading us to our next life journey.
Story Introduction

We set the background of the story in the Taiwanese village of the 60s and 70s. However, about the part of origami, we incorporate some modern elements. It is not just the lotus and the ingot will be burned, for the lost family, they also fold what the dead like before his or her death. We think this way of combination can more able to convey the thoughts of a family.

Suffering the sorrow of losing his father, the protagonist fell into great depression, but slowly, he found the sustenance during his father’s traditional funeral. Through the act of folding origami, he folded what his father likes or interests, and kept thinking all good memories with his father. The protagonist put his miss and blessing into gold papers.  Finally, blessings were brought to his father by burning all of paper, and the protagonist can move forward to his rest of life.

Portraying the custom of traditional funeral by such a picture book.  And uses origami to bring out emotions. It shows readers death is not terrible and not the end of a dead person, but as a beginning of his or her next journey.

In this picture book, the little man who is wearing a fur coat symbolizing the dark side of the protagonist's deep mental. It suggests that the protagonist hides himself in a coat, but he still want to be rescued by someone’s helping hand. Following this little man, we will explore more about the protagonist’s heart.
"Tick, tick, and tick. The rainy sky is damp and dark."

The little man sits on the roof with an umbrella, looking the distance of the darkness. The rainy sky is covered by the darkness, creating a lonely atmosphere. The flower on the umbrella is called Yellow Dendrobium, which is used to represent Father's Day.
"I can’t constrain my trembling breathing and weeping for your absence."

The perspective shifts to the interior. He gazes the photo with his father on the table in the house. It symbols their beautiful memories but also contrast the loneliness after his father's death.
"The four corners of the house are filled with your figure/form."

Every corner of the house is filled with things related to his father. When see them, this protagonist will recall all the details with his father in the past.
"Day in day out, I’ve kept folding Joss papers to lotus flowers which let your way to underworld more smoothly."

For the custom of entering the funeral, in order to convey the mind to the dead, family members will fold paper lotus and paper ingots. The little man holds a clock, representing the passage of time.
"But I wanna remember the past and fold Joss papers into your favorite things with my blessing and missing."

According to traditional funeral, people often fold the paper lotus and paper ingots. However, we believe it can be more meaningful to convey the wishes of the protagonist’s father by folding what his father likes, such as pipes, hats and shirts.
"I still remember you love to hold the favorite pipe sitting at the door and enjoy the leisure afternoon."
"You always wear the hat making you full of vigor and younger when going out."
"In addition, you cherish the shirt I sent very much, always keep it in the closet carefully, and you think it’s too precious for you to wear it."

Following the three items related to father, it began to bring the protagonist in memories, and the picture became brighter. It suggests that the protagonist is gradually coming out of sorrow. Using pipes, hats and shirts, which are related to his father, emphasizing protagonist’s deep emotion for his father.
"Those good memories dilute my sadness and reluctance.  With the flames, my full of missing and blessing are flied to the distance ."

Finally, following the traditional customs of Taiwan, burn those origami in the golden furnace. It conveys mind and blessings to the father, and bless that he would be able to live well in another world.
"Flying ashes  with my blessing like petals are soared in the endless blue sky. Now, it’s time to say goodbye to you. Wish we will meet again in the next trip."

The floating petals were taken to the sky, and the mind was taken to the distance. We pointed out the concept that "death is not the end, it is actually the beginning of the next journey".
